Description 

We are seeking a Water/Wastewater Engineer with approximately 5+ years of experience to join an environmental engineering firm in the Cary, North Carolina area. This hands-on role designs water mains, sanitary sewers, lift stations, industrial wastewater systems and municipal water and wastewater infrastructure, taking projects from hydraulic modeling through plans, specifications and bid documents.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on design experience on municipal projects, ideally for North Carolina clients, and coordinates comfortably with clients and internal engineering teams. The work is based in a collaborative office, with occasional field work and site visits, on projects that protect water resources and public health.

Duties / Tasks to perform

  • Design water mains and water distribution systems.

  • Design sanitary sewers and sewer systems.

  • Design lift stations.

  • Design industrial wastewater systems and support industrial wastewater projects.

  • Deliver municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects, with a focus on North Carolina municipal clients.

  • Perform hydraulic modeling and hydraulic load calculations.

  • Prepare plans and technical specifications, including design and permit drawings.

  • Prepare bid documents.

  • Coordinate with clients and internal engineering teams throughout each project.

  • Interface with local health departments, regulatory agencies, municipalities and property owners.

  • Perform site evaluations, inspections, troubleshooting and system upgrades for existing installations.

  • Take part in occasional light field work and site visits.

  • Stay current with local and state regulations and emerging treatment technologies.

  • [TO CONFIRM] Design and evaluate onsite and decentralized wastewater treatment and dispersal systems (septic, aerobic treatment units, drip systems, surface irrigation systems) for residential, commercial and small community applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Civil or Agricultural Engineering.

  • Approximately 5+ years of water/wastewater engineering experience.

  • Hands-on design experience with water mains, sanitary sewers, lift stations, industrial wastewater systems and municipal water/wastewater infrastructure.

  • Experience with hydraulic modeling and with water distribution and sewer system design.

  • Experience preparing plans and specifications, including bid documents.

  • Experience coordinating with clients and internal engineering teams.

  • Experience with AutoCAD tools, or the ability to learn them quickly.

  • Ability to work independently in both office and field settings.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in the office, living within commuting distance of Cary, NC, or genuinely willing to relocate.

  • Experience on projects for North Carolina municipal clients is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in onsite or decentralized wastewater design is preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Licensure level is one of the main factors in final compensation. Licensed Professional Engineers and engineers on the path to licensure are encouraged to apply.

  • A desire to obtain the FE and PE licenses is preferred.
