NOTES:
A Shift Superintendent Wastewater Treatment supervises the operating activities of a wastewater treatment facility; plans, coordinates, and directs the work of technical employees engaged in activities necessary to operate various treatment processes and related wastewater treatment equipment; applies sound supervisory principles in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Stress Tolerance; Supervision; Interpersonal Skills; Resolves Conflict; Process Improvement; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: safety principles, practices, and procedures as required by the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) and the Department of Public Works: Bureau of Sanitation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and workers’ compensation guidelines; established procedures of the Emergency Response Plan; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant equipment and water reclamation plant equipment; regulatory and permitting requirements of local, state and federal agencies as it relates to wastewater treatment and wastewater reclamation plants; and other necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
