Position Summary
The Wastewater Technician 1 is an entry level position that provides foundational support for the operation and maintenance of Mustang Special Utility District’s wastewater collection system. Working under the guidance of Technician 2’s and Senior Technicians, this role assists with basic lift station checks, sewer line cleaning preparation, equipment setup, and general site maintenance. The Technician assists and supports inspections, routine maintenance tasks, and documentation procedures.
Essential Functions:
- System Maintenance and Repairs: Assists with basic maintenance tasks such as clearing debris around manholes and lift stations, preparing tools and materials for sewer line cleaning, repairing sewer mains and laterals, and supporting routine site checks. They help observe lift station conditions and report findings to Senior Techs. The Technician I also assists with simple cleaning tasks and learns foundational wastewater system concepts.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance: This position helps prepare and maintain equipment such as service trucks, hoses, jetting tools, and small machinery. The Technician performs basic equipment cleaning, assists with loading and unloading tools, and supports pre-trip inspections under supervision. Observe and assist Senior Technicians in proper procedures of heavy equipment operation.
- Regulatory, Documentation & Communication: Assists with simple documentation tasks such as noting job locations, updating work orders, and recording basic field observations. They communicate clearly with Tech IIs and Senior Techs, ask questions to ensure understanding, and relay customer or site information when needed.
- Safety, Traffic Control & Emergency Response: Follows all safety protocols, consistently wears required PPE, and assists with placing cones, barricades, and signage for traffic control. They observe confined space entry procedures and learn proper safety practices. The Technician may assist during emergency response situations by providing labor support under direct supervision.
Customer and Public Support: The Technician provides basic customer support by directing inquiries to Operators and maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor at job sites.
QualificationsQualifications
Education:
- : High School Diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: Basic knowledge of wastewater collection systems
Experience:
- Preferred: 1 year of experience in wastewater collections.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Outdoor Work: You will primarily work in an outdoor environment, utilizing standard equipment such as power tools, hand tools, pumps, heavy equipment, trucks and trailers. It also involves physical activity such as walking, climbing and handling the equipment.
- Safety Gear: Consistently wear protective gear such as safety shoes, safety vests, gloves, and hard hats to ensure safety during fieldwork.
- Flexible Hours: Must be able to work outside of regular business hours to meet regulatory deadlines or respond to emergencies. This includes working early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Will also be subject to on-call rotation.
Conditions Of Employment:
- Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License before employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license within 30 days of hire per state law).
